The health effects of cannabidiol (CBD) are well known. This compound, which is derived from cannabis sativa plant and varieties of the plant like hemp, is effective in combating different conditions like anxiety, chronic pain, epilepsy, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), insomnia, and so much more. Although CBD is derived from the cannabis plant, it does not have any psychoactive properties. This is because it is different from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the main thing in this plant that gets you high. However, hemp contains low levels of CBD. Although there may be traces of THC in some CBD products, it is not enough to get you high. This means you cannot get intoxicated from ingesting CBD.

While CBD is generally safe, it has some side effects. The side effects of CBD are not very common. CBD is not harmful to humans and animals even in high doses. Before we look at the side effects of CBD, it is important to note that high-quality CBD products are less likely to have any side effects. With that said, the side effects of CBD are generally mild.

Drowsiness
Some people experience drowsiness when they take high dosages of CBD. Interestingly, most people experience a rise in energy levels when they take a low dose of CBD. Drowsiness can make it difficult for people to go about their activities. I should mention that drowsiness associated with CBD is not the kind that you get when you use marijuana. If you experience drowsiness when you take CBD, it is advisable to lower the amount of CBD that you take.

Dry Mouth
Another common symptom of using CBD is dry mouth. Studies show that the submandibular gland, which produces saliva, contains cannabinoid receptors. CBD has been found to produce anandamide, and it binds with these receptors. Thereby, affecting the gland’s ability to produce saliva and leading to dry mouth. One way to cure dry mouth is to sip on water from time-to-time.

Liver Drug Metabolism
CBD has also been found to affect the liver’s ability to break down drugs. Only people who are taking allopathic medicines at the same time they use CBD are susceptible to this. P450 enzymes, which are responsible for the metabolism of many medications, also breaks down CBD. Some drugs have been found to inhibit or catalyze the production of this enzyme. As a result, CBD may be broken down faster or may take longer. So the effects may be quick or may last for a long time. This is why it is advisable to consult a physician before taking CBD if you are on any medication.

Low Blood Pressure
Although CBD is known to help lower the blood pressure of people with high blood pressure. However, under some circumstances, people with normal blood pressure levels run a risk of ending up with low blood pressure from using CBD. A study published in Neuroscience journal in 2009 revealed that people with movement disorders experienced multiple symptoms including low blood pressure from using CBD. The good news is that this side effect of using CBD is short lived.

There are other side effects of CBD including digestive issues and blood clotting. However, the ones mentioned above are the most popular. It is safe to note that CBD is safe for both kids, adults, and animals. Unless you have experience with CBD, it is best to consult a doctor before you start using it.
